PRESS RELEASE: OMC Rising Star at 2014 Platts Awards

Delhi, India, 12 December 2014Last night in New York, OMC Power was named as The Rising Star at the 2014 Platts Global Energy Awards.

Described as the Academy Awards of the energy industry, the Global Energy Awards honour and recognise those who have transcended the status quo in the name of excellence in leadership, innovation and performance in the energy industry.

Established in 2011, OMC Power has transformed the provision of electricity in rural India into a commercially viable, sustainable and scalable business.

The Rising Star Company category of the awards recognises the achievements of either a genuine startup business or an existing business that has moved into a brand new field. The Awards say that “Elbowing into a new space in an already crowded industry takes guts, flawless execution, brilliant marketing and a tremendous organisational ability to learn fast.”

The independent panel of judges including former regulators, past heads of major energy companies, leading academics and international energy experts look for businesses that have used these skills to establish themselves as equal to – or better than – existing players in any energy industry field or discipline.

To date, OMC Power has financed, built and now operates 20 Micropower Plants in villages in Uttar Pradesh (India’s most populous state with 200+ million residents) where the electricity grid will never reach. The company recently received funding to build 200 Micropower plants which will reach 3+ million people in more than 6,000 villages.

Pär Almqvist, OMC Power’s Chief Marketing Officer, who received the award, said;

”To receive this accolade and emerge ahead of such strong competition from around the world is a testament to the strength of both our vision and our ability to deliver. We will continue to innovate and invest because every day we see how our business is improving the lives of people in rural India – helping them to grow their economies and improve their quality of life.”

Every day OMC delivers thousands of pre-charged LED lanterns, electric bikes and portable PowerBoxes to homes and small businesses. The PowerBoxes – portable power sockets – are used to power a variety of electrical appliances including mobile phones, LED lights and fans.

OMC Power also supplies green electricity to the telecom towers of India’s three major telecom infrastructure companies, including Bharti Infratel, which have been able to instantly turn off the diesel generators currently powering their remote and rural telecom towers – saving large amounts of fossil fuel and curbing emissions.

Since launching OMC Power has received numerous accolades:
